Paul Gibson

Paul Gibson is a Norwegian photographer whose work blends documentary realism with a poetic sense of portraiture. Having studied at a photography school in Paris, he developed a refined visual language that navigates the space between identity and representation, capturing moments where the personal becomes political. His photographs are marked by stillness and depth, quiet images that question how we see, and how we are seen.

Bonfire

Gibson began photographing as a teenager, drawn first to the shifting light and solitude of the Norwegian coast. His later studies in philosophy gave his practice a conceptual backbone, allowing him to use photography not only to depict but to interrogate.

Influenced by thinkers such as Judith Butler and Hannah Arendt, he explores how identity is performed, constrained, and occasionally liberated through the act of being observed. Years of travel and collaboration have given his work an international sensibility while preserving its distinctly Nordic restraint. Gibson’s portraits often linger in ambiguity and poised between vulnerability and control, revealing a fascination with the quiet theatre of human existence.
